How do I clean an unfinished mahogany guitar?
I have a Guild DV-4 acoustic guitar, and I would like to polish/clean it. It's all solid wood, mostly mahogany with a spruce top. There is very thin lair of protective finish on it, but for the most part the wood is exposed. How does one clean mahogany to get the longest life out of the guitar?
You may have a DV4 with a satin finish rather than the glossy finish you usually see on acoustics. If it is bare wood you don't want any water on it. If you go to the home center, there will be a lemon oil wood cleaner that should be used sparingly on a soft rag. Linseed or tung oil is a wonderful protectant, but leaves a finish of its own and may transfer to your clothes. If you decide to use linseed oil, it's every day for a week, every week for a month, every month for a year, and every year forever. Linseed oil and cotton cloth rags should never be left in the house.....big fire risk.
