how do i bend guitar strings?
i just started learning and whenever i bend up my fingers go under the strings...what am i doin wrong
The more you play guitar the more you will build up callouses on the fingertips of your right hand. Besides being the trademark of guitar players, these callouses protect your fingertips and help you hit the strings with more accuracy. When you develop a bit of a callous you will find that each time you go to play, each of your fretting fingers gets a sort of a little indent or groove where the string digs in to the skin. (Not painful, since you have the callouses.)
So when you have callouses and in each playing session your fingertips develop their string grooves, it is that groove that helps keep the string UNDER your fingertip when bending strings. So it's something that will mostly just come as you play at least a few times each week.
For now while your fingers are softer, it's just a matter of applying enough pressure to the string, from mostly the front (not the bottom) of the bending string. Perhaps hitting the string more with the finger pad than the finger tip will help.
Something I feel I should mention is that bending isn't really a necessary skill to be learned right away. As a beginner there are more basic skills that can (and some would say SHOULD) come first, then you can add to your skills with embellishments like string bending. Starting with a good and solid foundation of basics is an excellent way to make sure you are a solid player which will help you exponentially as you develop more skills rather than possibly just becoming a hack with just a little ability in a bunch of random areas. BUT if this isn't something that you are concerned about, and you're just out to have fun with the guitar, then by all means have fun and learn in what ever way you think is best for you!
