Guitar Power Chords Chart
Fminor guitar key help?
I am a beginner who is learning guitar keys for the first time. I have a query -
I tried writing a chord progression in the key of F minor. According to my chart/guide that gave me the chords - fm, gdim, ab, bbm, cm, db and eb to play with.
What I dont get is, having read on wiki about Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' which is also wrote in FM, it says - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is written in the key of F minor, with the main guitar riff constructed from four power chords (F5–B♭5–A♭5–D♭5)"
How come my chart isnt showing chords like "f5" etc? And what key does chords like G7, F7 etc fall under? Does every key really only stick religiously to seven chords?
As I say, im a beginner trying to get to grips with these things for the first time so go easy on me!
I think Wiki is calling the power chords F5 and Bb5 and Ab5 and Db5 because power chords are supposed to be basically just the root and the fifth of the chord -- that's why they put the number 5 with the chord name, i.e.F5, Bb5, etc. Traditionally, there's no third in a power chord that would make it major or minor.
So F5, etc. isn't really an official way of designating a power chord and that's why you won't see an F5 chord in your chart. It's Wiki's way of designating a power chord.
A song can have any chord in it, no matter what key the song's written in. It just has to subjectively sound good to the composer or the listener. So every key definitely does not stick religiously to seven chords. Western music has evolved into having certain rules about keys and chords, but they're not always hard and fast rules. Basically and generally speaking, a seventh chord (F7, A7, Bb7, etc.) is often used as a fifth chord (V7) that then leads to the tonic (I) chord. Seventh chords generally lead to the chord that's a fourth up or a fifth down (same note an octave apart). So a G7 chord would lead to C because G7 is the V7 of the key of C.
Hope this helps.
