A Primer For The Electric Guitar

Electric Guitars are musical instruments that give off a sound through vibrating strings that are converted to electrical currents through the pickups and then amplified. The first electric guitars were produced in the 1930s and consisted hollow-arch top Acoustic Guitars with electromagnetic transducers attached. The modern 'solid-body' electric guitar made its debut in the 1940s with the invention of the Fender by Les Paul.

The BodyThe standard electric guitar design has a solid wood body that has mounted pickups and controls (although some do have resonance chambers that are semi-hollow). The type of wood used in the body's construction is just as important as that of an acoustic guitar (acoustic guitars use wooden soundboards, which is the wood of the body through which sound is vibrated). Note: the right handed and left handed acoustic electric guitar both use soundboards in their sound reproduction. The electric guitar's body wood will establish the resonation. Dense woods produce rich sounds, such as ash, mahogany, and alder.

The Bar of the GuitarString tension variation is controlled with a metal bar attached to the bridge. This bar (also known as the Vibrato, Wang, Whammy, or Tremolo Bar) tilts the bridge back and forth.

The Neck and Fingerboard of the GuitarMost electric guitar necks are made of maple wood. Laminated to the front of the neck is a strip of wood (usually rosewood or maple) called the fingerboard or fretboard. Running above the fingerboard are the strings, which are pressed into the fingerboard during playing to change the vibrating lengths to change pitch. Rosewood fingerboards are dark of timbre. Maple fretboards are bright of pitch.

The PickupsThe pickups are what makes the sound and thus they can be said to be the 'voice' of the guitar. They are made of magnets wrapped in wire. The strings vibrate when the guitar is played. These vibrations disrupt the magnetic field of the pickup. This creates an electric current that is then amplified.

Pickups fall into two different categories:

Single Coil PickupsThese are pickups with only one coil. They have a bright sound but tend to produce a 'humming' sound. The elemental signal and harmonic matter are the basis of the hum and they are caused by magnetic-flux changes within the pickup.

Humbucker PickupsBecause of the hum distortion of the single coil pickup, the Humbucker, or dual coil, pickup was created. These pickups have a thick sound and consist of two coils wound in a mirror image of each other. The polarity is opposed within the six magnetic-coils. All of this cancels out the ambient sound or hum before it is amplified. Some guitars have the option of switching between single coil and Humbucker.

Guitar StringsElectric guitar strings have various windings, alloys, and gauges, all of which factor into the sound of the guitar. All electric guitar strings are made of metal and the right handed electric guitar is strung high E, B, G, D, A, and low E while the left handed electric guitar is strung upside down.

The String's AlloysMost commonly used are strings made of steel because they produce vast volumes and tones that are brilliant. Stainless-steel nickel plated strings have a subdued tone. Nickel strings have a muted-round sound and are best used in rhythm and jazz.

GaugeThe thickness of the string is the gauge. Those who wish to play the guitar fast will need thinner gauged strings because they are easy to bend. Strummers who want vast volume should use strings that are medium of gauge. While hard to play because the strings don't bend very well, a full vibrant sound can be had with strings of a heavy gauge

WindingStrings have 4 different types of windings: ground, flat, round, and nylon taped. Rejected by fast-players because the strings 'grab' the fingers, the most common winding is round. Fast players who want a tone that is subdued prefer flat windings (also known as ribbon winding) which have a smooth, almost oily, surface. Electric bass guitars are the only instruments that have ground windings which are round windings that have a machine polish. Those who want their electric guitar to sound like an acoustic bass guitar will want to use strings that are nylon taped. Nylon taped strings have any of the three afore mentioned windings and are coated with nylon.

One must do his or her homework when finding an electric guitar for sale. The prospective buyer must take into consideration the type of music he or she plans to play and how comfortable he or she will be with the instrument. Each guitar has an individual sonic-personality because of the various combinations of pickups, wood, and string.
