Help with Open C Tuning?

Okay so there's a song I wanted to play on my guitar and it says its in Open C tuning. I looked it up and it said that's CGCGCE... I have this tuner that I used to tune it to that.

I tuned my 6th, 4th and 2nd down to C and all I needed was the 5th. So I tuned it to a higher pitch to make it sound like the 3rd string and boom it popped.

Why? My guitar isnt old and the strings arent too so why did it break when I tried to tune it up? -.-
Need to buy new strings because of this.
@whooh, okay with my new strings I'll use a capo. But I still don't know how to tune it. Can you tell me how I could get an open C tune using a capo? Please :)
@Kris, fuccck I get it now... So I was supposed to tune the A string lower? And not higher? IM AN IDIOT =.=

Generally you would tune the A (5th string) DOWN to G, 'cause when you tune up to G, you're going up 6 whole steps and that's a lot of tension.

The B (2nd string) would be tuned UP to C.

String breakage is quite normal for guitars. Normally strings should be changed every couple of months depending on how often you play and the type of strings you use. Most of the times, strings just become dead (loses its tone) before they actually break, and you should change the strings.
