Garmisch-partenkirchen - One Of The Most Picturesque Towns In Germany
Perhaps you've heard about Garmisch-Partenkirchen, perhaps you haven't. It's in Bavaria in the South of Germany, near the Austrian border.
The town itself is picture-perfect. The architecture is something that you would expect in a scene from Hansel and Gretel. The surrounding mountains are so beautiful that they literally take your breath away - especially if you should be on top of the Zugspitse, Germany's highest mountain peak. The numerous lakes and rivers in the area, as well as the must-see gorge of Partnachklamm add even more charm to and beauty to the area.
If you came here to ski, you are only of of thousands who do so every year, since Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a very popular ski town. There are skiing opportunities for skiers of all levels - from those who need beginner's lessons to advanced skiers. Top quality alpine skiing equipment can be bought or rented in town.
To get to the ski slopes there are a large number of ski lifts and cable cars and you can even take a train to a spot not far from the top of the Zugspitse - you only need to take a cable car to get right to the top. By the way, there is a lovely historical little coffee shop near the top station.
There are an abundance of hotels and guest houses in town to cater for the annual tourist influx. If you prefer a quieter spot, there's also a number of options available in many of the surrounding towns and villages.
During the weeks before Christmas, the famous Christmas markets get in full swing. Everywhere you walk, you will find cute little stalls selling everything from a black sport watch to glasses of the local delicacy - gluhwein. This spicy red wine is served steaming hot and is the perfect antidote for a cold day in the Alps.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen also has more than enough to offer at nighttime. There are numerous little restaurants where you can have a dinner by candlelight, while sipping a glass of gluhwein. If you hear the gentle sounds of an ibanez electric guitar in the background it will only add to the ambiance of the evening...
The surrounding countryside, towns and villages are also very interesting and colorful. About 30km from Garmisch-Partenkirchen you will find the historical town of Oberammergau, where the world famous passion play has taken place every ten years since 1632 - when God delivered the town from the Black Plague. Virtually everyone in town is involved in some way or another with the play and practicing starts years before the next play. All over town you will see colorful murals portraying nativity scenes.
